The analysis of catches and the biological structure of the Danubian stock of shad was done basing on the materials from 1946 - 2004. It was found that a decrease in catches took place over the last 50 years, which has fallen by 2,5 times relative to the weight and by 3 times relative to the number of specimens on the background of intensifying fishing. By the end of the 1990s, after the at least 50-year stability, the biological structure changed drastically: the linear sizes and, especially, the mass of fishes increased, the sex ratio shifted towards females. The rate of maturity increased, and therefore the share of 2-year old fish, coming for the reproduction, increased by one order. The similar changes of the biological characteristics of shad, jointly with the abrupt decrease in number, were noted in the late 1960s in the Don populations of the Pontic shad, followed by the irreversible time depression of the earlier most numerous herd of Pontic shad. Such a comparison allows us to suggest that the Danube herd is now very close to the depressive state due to the overfishing in the 1990s and the general decrease in number.
